Get Involved -> Reach The City

“The city is an intrinsically positive social form with a checkered past and a beautiful future.”

                                 Timothy Keller Center Church

What does “Get Involved -> Reach the City” exactly mean?

That is our mission statement at Cornerstone Fellowship. We’ve learned it the hard way. You see after years of slow decline in attendance, the leadership of Cornerstone Fellowship took a long hard look at itself and realized it something very important:

We had lost the vision of what it means to be a church.

To be honest we never stopped preaching from God’s Word & the hope found only in Jesus Christ. We really never stopped caring about wanting to reach the community with the gospel. Yet we discovered we were disconnected in large part from the community we were desperate to reach.

  How’s that for honesty!

So what does it mean to be a Church?

(NIV) Romans 12:1 “Therefore, I urge you, brothers, in view of God’s mercy, to offer your bodies as living sacrifices, holy and pleasing to God– this is your spiritual act of worship.”

1. Understand Who You Are In Christ & What Your Called To Do.Crosses Website Banner Design

– Jesus saved us from sin and death by taking our rightful place on the cross and putting Himself right in the cross  hairs of God’s wrath and punishment for sin.

– The only reasonable thing we can do in light of all God has done for us is dedicate our whole lives to Him!

– We must obediently follow His will, His plan for our lives not just because God says  so but because of the incredible amount of gratitude we should have in light of all He has done for us.

2. The Church Is The Body of Christ

1 Corinthians 12:12  “The body is a unit, though it is made up of many parts; and though all its parts are many, they form one body. So it is with Christ.”

– I have heard many times people say “Well you can still be a Christian even if you don’t go to church.Fellowship Bulletin Cover”                While this is technically correct let me ask you one question?

Would you rather go into battle:

1. By yourself, or just you and your family

                               2. With a whole army by your side?

*If you are a follower of Jesus… and you don’t belong to a church…           Good Luck!  Your gonna need it!                                                         fighting the world, the sinful flesh and the Devil all by yourself.

– The reason why the Bible never says outright (and that’s even debatable) GO TO CHURCH! is because it’s already assumed you should know that. Do you think it’s coincidence 2/3 of the New Testament contains letter written to…….. CHURCHES! So if your a follower of Jesus you might want to join one if your not part of one already.

– The Church should function like our own bodies function. Each part no matter how big or small is vitally important. Every believer is gifted in some special way toward the function of the whole body. It’s not just the pastor’s job to serve in the church. It’s every believer’s job… with Christ as the head of the body.

3. Church is not LIKE family, Church IS family

We realized some very important things about how we were doing church,

& how to become the body of Christ again…

  1. Overall the Church needs to STOP being so INWARD focused & needs to be OUTWARD focused on the community of Mill Run & the city of Altoona.
  2. As the church gets involved with you. You along with the Church go out & reach the city with the Gospel of Jesus Christ.
  3. You may wonder why be so open with our struggles? This is a big part of HOW we want to get involved! This may come as a shock to some…BUT NO ONE IS PERFECT…especially Christians! Reaching the city involves a willingness to be open & transparent with our struggles along with our hope found only in Jesus. We aren’t broadcasting our sins to the world, but we are being genuinely open and honesty with our fears & struggles. That way maybe, just maybe people will realize it’s ok if I struggle with stuff too.
  4. The ONLY qualification for joining the church is realizing your UNQUALIFIED! Church is NOT for perfect people but for sinners! Even Christians still sin & sometimes ALOT! That’s why we keep going to church. Your not sinless, or perfect so please don’t expect us to be either.
  5. You are much more than just a number. We need to treat people not as numbers, not as dollar bills in the offering plate, but show people we really actually genuinely care about them as people.
  6. The Church is a family. It is a collection of believers who care about one another in good times and in bad. We don’t always get along perfectly. Just like family though the church helps each other & rallies around one another in times of need. Just like family we need to provide rest for the weary & a place of refuge for the brokenhearted.
  7. The church must preach the word of God & show the love of Jesus without exception, without excuse, without compromise.
